Words+Text+Numbers All Media Exhibition

Deadline: March 25, 2016
Opening Reception: May 20, 2016, 5pm to 8pm
Exhibition Dates: May 20 - July 2, 2016
Gallery Talk: June 1, 7pm

What happens when artists weave the visual units of language — like letters, words, and numbers — into their works of art? The visual presence of words and characters interrupt our regular interpretation of artwork; the piece speaks with a direct (or indirect) voice. This exhibit seeks work that incorporates textual characters (letters, words, numbers, passages, etc.) as an integral aesthetic component. All types of media and styles are welcome.

Joel received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1992 and his BFA from Tufts University in 1990. He is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.He has long engaged chance onlookers and art gallery visitors with strategically and secretly installed text-based sculptures and resulting photographs. His work activates our imagination and invites us to stop and consider some of the spaces we travel through or pass by every day: from roadways to alleys to the dead space behind strip malls. His messages tempt us to plug the gaps in these short stories, to puzzle out their meaning, and to speculate about their authors. He is represented by Monique Meloche Gallery, Chicago
