CLAYTON—The St. Louis Artists' Guild proudly presents Speaking Volumes, a dual exhibition of work by artists Susan Shie and Richard Meyers. Both of these artists use their artwork to capture intimate and deeply personal experiences, and both of these artists have sensory disabilities (Shie is visually impaired, Meyers is hearing impaired). This exhibition is part of the St. Louis Artists' Guild's Sound and Vision exhibition series.

For this exhibition, the St. Louis Artists' Guild partnered with VSA Missouri, a statewide organization promoting access to the arts for people with disabilities. VSA Missouri is one of a network of VSA affiliates throughout the world, affiliated with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

About RIchard Meyers:

Richard Meyers is a deaf artist living and working in St. Louis, MO. Always accompanied by his sketchbooks or drawing papers, Meyers is constantly inspired by his surroundings: museums, parks, restaurants, his own home. These drawings become the basis for his paintings. "Painting is beauty—simple, inspirational, and sentimental," says Meyers. Richard Meyers studied art at Florissant Valley Community College and the Kansas City Art Institute, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. He currently works for the Missouri History Museum as an exhibit builder and installer.

About Susan Shie:

Susan Shie is a visually impaired artist from the state of Ohio. She describes her artwork as "personal diary work with themes focusing around the kitchen and family...astrology, peace, and the environment..with a whole lot of emphasis on peace and compassion-centered politics." Shie's creative process combines painting, drawing, and quilting—drawing on blank fabric with an airbrush, she then fills in the composition with handwritten text pulled from personal experiences, stories, and current events. Susan Shie holds a BA in Painting from the College of Wooster in Ohio and a MFA in Painting from Kent State University. She has exhibited internationally, including venues such as the Houston Center for Contemporary Crafts (Houston, TX), the Ohio Craft Museum (Columbus, OH) and the Festival of Quilts (Birmingham, England).

About the Sound and Vision Exhibition Series:

Sound and Vision is a group of five exhibits exploring how we experience and create environments through sight and sound. These exhibits explore the sensory, cultural, and personal aspects of sound. During this stimulating exhibition series, participants will become more aware of how they navigate their environments through sensory experiences. Financial support for Sound and Vision was provided by Pepose Vision Institute, the Missouri Arts Council, and the Regional Arts Commission.
