Lay of the Land

Painting by Grant Kniffen
Painting William Neukomm
Painting by Barbara Martin Smith

Lay of the Land is an all-media exhibition of artwork exploring natural or urban landscapes and outdoor environments.

Juror's Statement

Many thanks to Kathryn Nahorski and everyone else at the St Louis Artists' Guild for inviting me to be the juror for the Lay of the Land exhibit. It’s been a privilege and an honor to participate in selecting the work for a show in such an established institution. I hope my contribution is worthy of the task entrusted to me.

Like any job worth doing, the work of selecting a show is both rewarding and difficult. I’ve tried to balance an attempt to objectively assess the work submitted, while at the same time honoring my own instincts for what makes a rich and balanced exhibition. I’d like to encourage the artists whose work was not represented not to be discouraged, but to keep in mind that the selection process is inevitably subjective and that in a different show and different time, their work could well have been chosen. »Read more...
