Charcoal Drawing Workshop: The cylinder, the sphere, and the cone

Saturday November 22, 2025

10am-4pm

Instructor: Dr. Michael Faris

Paul Cezanne wrote the following in his famous letter to Emile Bernard: May I repeat what I told you here: treat nature by means of the cylinder, the sphere, the cone, everything brought into proper perspective. . . Thus Cezanne detailed the importance of understanding how to depict each of these forms properly. In this workshop, each student will draw a cylinder, a cone, and a sphere with various types of charcoal. Concepts of value changes, the creation of volume, and a consistent light source with be emphasized in these drawings. The workshop will conclude with each student creating an original composition that includes all of the forms.

This workshop is for students of all skill levels.

Bring a lunch! There will be a short break around mid day!

Materials are included in the cost of the workshop, but are listed in the document below if you’d like to bring your own!
