Composition Boot Camp- Expression in Line, Value, and Texture

Proof that Black and White doesn’t have to be boring! It is the foundation you build upon. Beginners to advanced--- we will be exploring the basics, but we will be working in just black and white. In the beginning you will work only in line and basic shapes---nothing recognizable!

This class will hone your skills in creating artwork by hand and making stronger compositions. You will learn about the Design Method and how to learn from your (and your classmates) mistakes and successes.

This is a class for someone who has never explored drawing to a seasoned professional- I will be challenging you to make the simple exciting.

The class will be bare bones material-wise: Copy paper and ballpoint pen or black marker. You will learn about composition mapping, the different types of balance, ways to strengthen your design and how the communicate big ideas with just a few elements of art.

In this course, you will follow the design method. So we will brainstorm ideas, discuss your sketches, develop the strongest ones, and create a finished work with solid craftsmanship. We will be learning as a group, sharing our mistakes(the best way to learn) and our successes. Creating art in community is a powerful force. You will learn useful vocabulary and hands-on skills and practice creating your own compositions and how to discuss design as well. We will be using a smart phone camera for an activity in Week 6, but it is not required for the class.
