Surrealism: Drawing from the Subconscious Mind

July 29 - September 2, 2025

6 Weeks, Tuesdays, 10AM-12:30PM

Instructor: Dr. Michael Faris

Works of Surrealism often feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non sequiturs. Surrealism is an art and cultural movement in which artists aimed to allow the subconscious mind to express itself, often resulting in the depiction of illogical or dreamlike scenes and ideas. Surrealism aims to create a "super-reality" by combining ordinary objects in unexpected ways, pushing the boundaries of reality. This class will emphasize juxtapositions, or placing subject matter in proximity to unusual settings or interactions.

This studio class is designed for students who have some experience in drawing. Demonstrations and critiques will be used to explain techniques and composition. Each session will include a drawing assignment.
