(DRAFT)
Impressionistic Approaches to Plein Air Painting Workshop
October 16, 17, 18, 2026
Friday, 5 - 8PM
Saturday and Sunday, 9AM - 12PM
Instructor: Sarah Lorentz
Age Limits: 16+
This three day painting workshop is for acrylic painters and oil painters alike who want to gain experience with ‘plein air’ painting, painting from direct observation outdoors! The workshop is broken into two parts, an evening in the STLAG classroom, and two days of painting on site in Forest Park.
Working ‘plein air’– outdoors, from direct observation–is one of the best ways to improve your skills as a landscape painter. Painting in the field encourages faster, looser rendering and a focus on editing compositional elements. Working in the same tradition as the Impressionists, we’ll study the effects of light and color in nature and learn to effectively capture these effects in paint.
This class is open to all skill levels, but prior basic drawing/painting experience is preferred. This workshop includes an overview of fundamental drawing and painting techniques, color theory, and strategies for working in the field. The class will include a presentation, short demonstrations, working time with individual feedback, and group review and feedback. Students are welcome to register to participate in either 1 or 2 days of field painting in addition to the first day of in-class activities.
See material list for required supplies and plan for each day. Students are responsible for organizing transportation to and from site at Forest Park.
3 Days (Friday/Saturday/Sunday): Member $150 | Non-member $200
2 Days (Friday/Saturday): Member $100 | Non-member $150
If you must cancel, please email (info@stlouisartistsguild.org) or call STLAG. A refund will be given only if cancellation occurs seven days prior to the first day of class. No exceptions. Refunds will be processed minus a $25 withdrawal fee per course registration.
