Interiors and Exteriors in Oil Paint

April 28 - June 2, 2026

6 weeks, Tuesdays, 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Instructor: Michael Faris

Interiors in our postmodern world have all sorts of factory-made items, such as all of our electrical items and cyber technology. Our kitchens and living rooms are filled with all sorts of wondrous machines for making food or entertaining us. There are all sorts of straight lines and perfect circles in interior spaces. Interiors have lines that are perpendicular.

Exteriors are wild, organic spaces, with slow curves and organized chaos. There are all sorts of insects and other animals flying overhead and running around. The artistic information in a single yard is almost endless, with its grass lawn, bushes, flowers, and wonderful trees. Look up and see the beautiful sky and clouds. Exteriors are ever-changing, and an exterior in the winter can be very different from the same space in the summer.

Painting objects from these two spaces, interior and exterior, can be an exercise in disparity. The clean, exact lines and smooth textures of the interiors will often not work with the unruly entities that we find in nature. And the curvy lines and rough textures of the outside will often not work with objects that are inside. The goal in this class is to learn to depict articles in each of these very different environments.

This studio class is designed for students interested in oil painting. Demonstrations and critiques will be used to explain techniques and composition. Each session will include a painting assignment. Students can paint the assigned objects or their own choices of interior and exterior objects.

See syllabus for material list.
