Just Make It; a workshop about play and abstraction

October 28 - November 11, 2025

Tuesdays, 3 weeks, 6 - 8:30 PM

Instructor: Samantha Clarke

Designed for both beginners and seasoned artists, this class emphasizes experimentation and discovery over polished outcomes. Students will explore how paint interacts with unconventional materials such as yarn, foil, feathers, collage, and glitter. In addition to any of these "extras" that will be provided to you, feel free to bring anything that could go on your canvas. Through guided exercises and open-ended play, we’ll look at composition, layering, and visual balance, encouraging you to push past your comfort zone and expand your ideas about what painting can be.

Students can look forward to demos and guided instruction with various materials, most notably glitter and dyed synthetic materials, such as feather boas and yarn. Expect engaging in conversation about craft and folk art. At what point does craft become art? Are there biases about craft and craft materials in the modern art world? If so, shouldn't we explore this? And the all important question "isn't glitter bad for the environment? Is it possible to ethically introduce glitter into my art?" (Spoiler, yes, yes it is!)

STLAG will provide some materials (see Material List below) but students are encouraged to bring additional materials they are excited to experiment with!
