Surrealism in Collage: Building your own world
July 25, 2026
Saturday, 10:00 AM - 1:30 PM
Instructor: Paola Scharberg
16+
Surrealism emerged in the early 20th century as a movement against rationalism. It often focuses on positive expression and explores the unconscious mind. The workshop will begin with a short introduction about collage as an art form and the most prominent surrealist collage artist. In this workshop, students will create dreamlike collages that explore absurdity, irrationality, and fantasy. We will build upon the subconscious and learn to juxtapose contrasting images to question reality, construct new narratives and create works that are bizarre and thought-provoking.
This workshop is for all artistic levels and no prior experience is required.
All materials are included in the cost of the workshop, but students are encouraged to bring any material they would like to collage with ex: photos, magazines, printed materials, drawings, books, portraits, colored/textured paper.
We will take a 30 minute break around noon, bring a snack!
