Teen Intensives: Ages 14-18

Teen Intensive camps at the STLAG are perfect for high school students ready to take their artwork to the next level or strengthen their portfolio for college applications. Each camp is taught by experienced teaching artists who enjoy working with all types of students, from those just beginning their artistic journey to more experienced young artists who want to hone their skills.

Monday-Friday, 3:00PM-5:30PM

Week 4 will have an additional camp earlier in the day (10AM-2PM)

Camps are limited to approximately 10 students.

If you must cancel, please email (info@stlouisartistsguild.org) or call STLAG. A refund will be given only if cancellation occurs seven days prior to the first day of class. No exceptions. Refunds will be processed minus a $25 withdrawal fee (per camp if multiple camps are purchased).

Watercolor for Teens

Week 1: June 8-12, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

During this course, students will learn the basics of watercolor and form, some observational drawing techniques and how to start a painting. Students will try various layering, masking, and wash techniques. The class will emphasize color theory and working from observation. Each day will be a little different, demonstrations and individual instruction will accommodate all skill levels. Students will practice their skills, and complete projects based on their own interests. Teens will leave with newfound confidence in their watercolor skills!

Portrait Drawing for Teens Session #1

Week 1: June 8-12, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

This class will cover the use charcoal and graphite to render the human portrait. Students will also learn basic composition and structure. Your instructor will cover the anatomy of facial form in an accessible and encouraging way so that the student can continue personal studies of the subject with confidence.

Figure Drawing for Teens Session #1

Week 2: June 15-19, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

Students will work from a live clothed model in this one-week camp. Over the week, students will learn the fundamentals of figure drawing as they tackle strategies for capturing the figure through gestural sketches and develop their drawings into completed pieces. Proportions of the figure will be taught, alongside using value to capture light and form.

Charcoal Drawing for Teens Session #1

Week 2: June 15-19, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

From preparing the paper to showing a finished drawing, Charcoal Drawing for Teens explores the ins and outs of how to draw like a professional artist while learning the fundamentals needed to best represent 3-dimensional space on a 2-dimensional surface. The course will focus on the accurate rendering of real life objects through observation, measurement, use of line, and an understanding of how light acts upon an object. Throughout the class students will create multiple, fully realized still-life drawings.

Acrylic Painting for Teens

Week 3: June 22-26, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

This teen intensive will focus on acrylic painting techniques and application of color theory to create realistic artwork. Teens will develop their understanding of form and color. This is a fast-paced afternoon camp intended for artists who are ready to take their art abilities to the next level. A basic understanding of drawing is helpful. Teens will paint from observation, as well as from photographs to make works they are proud to show off!

Oil Painting Basics for Teens

Week 3: June 22-26, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

Do you have experience with painting, but want to learn about oil paints? In this teen camp, artists will learn techniques like color mixing, underpainting, identifying shadows and highlights, and different brush techniques to try and tackle this medium. This camp is intended for beginner oil painters who are ready to take their art abilities to the next level. A basic understanding of painting is helpful! Teens will paint from a still life, that the students and instructor collaborate to set up. Students may bring their own item to contribute to the still life.

Digital Illustration for Teens Session #1

Week 4: July 6-10, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

In this camp, teens will learn the basics of the drawing program Procreate, using an iPad and an Apple Pencil to create digital illustrations. We'll explore how to use different color palettes, backgrounds, brushes and textures, as well as layers to create a variety of unique digital illustrations. Knowledge of basic drawing skills is beneficial in this course, but it is not required.

Supplies are included in the cost of the class. iPads and Apple Pencils will be provided to use during camp, but cannot be taken home. Students are welcome to bring their own if they have them!

Week 5: July 13-17, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

This class will cover the use of oil paints to render the human portrait. Your instructor will introduce methodology, techniques, and materials that make the process of oil painting the anatomy of facial form accessible and encouraging so that the student can continue personal studies of the subject with confidence. Further, the class will discuss the importance of under-painting in establishing composition and structure for the addition of color.

Printmaking for Teens

Week 5: July 13-17, Monday - Friday, 3:00PM - 5:30PM

This week, teens will learn about two types of printmaking, linocuts and monotypes. Teens will work to create blocks that can be printed over and over again, exploring the way that mark can create line, form, and pattern. Teens will also experiment with monotype, to create unique, one of a kind prints while learning to use the print press. They will experiment with these exciting processes and come away from the week with a variety of prints!
