Young Artists: Ages 10-13

Our camps for Young Artists give students the chance to take art classes that develop their abilities to draw and paint from life and the imagination as they push themselves beyond what they knew they were capable of achieving. Camp ends with an art show for families and guests to enjoy.

Monday-Friday, 10AM-2PM with a break for lunch from 11:45AM-12:15PM.

Camps are limited to approximately 10 students.

Supplies are included in the cost of the class, and students are responsible for bringing their own lunch

If you must cancel, please email (info@stlouisartistsguild.org) or call STLAG. A refund will be given only if cancellation occurs seven days prior to the first day of class. No exceptions. Refunds will be processed minus a $25 withdrawal fee (per camp if multiple camps are purchased).

Before and After Care

This year, we are offering before care (9AM-10AM) and after care (2PM - 3PM) for Budding Artist and Young Artist camps.

Please select before care ($20/week/child), after care ($20/week/child), or both ($40/week/child), and choose the quantity of weeks that your student will need care for.

If you are registering multiple campers, please account for that when selecting quantity (ex: 2 campers for 2 weeks would be a quantity of 4)

All pertinent information about before/after care and pickup will be sent 2 weeks prior to the start of camp.

Digital Illustration for the Young Artist Session #1

Week 1: June 8-12, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

In this camp, Young Artists will learn the basics of the drawing program Procreate, using an iPad and an Apple Pencil to create digital illustrations. We'll explore how to use different color palettes, backgrounds, brushes and textures, as well as layers to create a variety of unique illustrations. In this camp, students will delve into character development and storytelling. Students will create unique characters and plan narratives for them. We will put these skills into practice and create a comic, or illustrate our story that we will print out to show off!

Supplies are included in the cost of the class and students are responsible for bringing their own lunch. iPads and Apple Pencils will be provided to use during camp, but cannot be taken home. Students are welcome to bring their own if they have them!

Acrylic Painting for the Young Artist Session #1

Week 1: June 8-12, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

This class will focus on acrylic painting techniques and introductions of color theory to create realistic artwork. We will develop your understanding of form and color that are universal to art applications in any medium. This is a fast-paced camp intended for beginner and intermediate-level artists who are ready to take their art abilities to the next level. A basic understanding of drawing is helpful but not required. Young Artists will paint from observation, as well as from photographs to make works they are proud to show off!

Drawing for the Young Artist Session #1

Week 2: June 15-19, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

From preparing the paper to showing a finished drawing, Drawing for the Young Artists explores the ins and outs of how to draw like a professional artist while learning the fundamentals needed to best represent 3-dimensional space on a 2-dimensional surface. The instructor will familiarize the class with artist-quality materials while completing drawings from life using different drawing media like compressed charcoal, vine charcoal, and graphite pencils. By the end of the week, students will have a deeper understanding of how to draw the world around them and how to push their talents beyond what they knew they could achieve.

Textiles for the Young Artist

Week 2: June 15-19, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

In this week long camp, young artists will work with textiles and fabric to create a variety of unique pieces without the need for a sewing machine! Students will learn about weaving, as well as ways to collage with fabric. They will create small tapestries, collaging and stitching pieces together to create a patchwork portrait. Young artists will explore the use of thread, yarn, and other mixed media to create weavings.

Printmaking for the Young Artist

Week 4: July 6-10, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

In this week long camp, young artists will learn about two types of printmaking, linocuts and monotypes. Campers will create multiple blocks that can be printed over and over again, exploring the way that mark can create line, form, and pattern. They will also attempt a reductive print method where the block is slowly carved away, leaving them with a limited run of multi colored prints! Campers will also experiment with monotype, to create a collaborative print while learning to use the print press. Young artists will leave with a new newfound appreciation for printmaking!

Oil Painting for the Young Artist

Week 5: July 13-17, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

Does your artist have experience with painting, but want to learn about oil paints? In this camp, artists will learn techniques like color mixing, underpainting, identifying shadows and highlights, and different brush techniques to try and tackle this medium. This camp is intended for beginner oil painters who are ready to take their art abilities to the next level. A basic understanding of painting is helpful! Young Artists will paint from observation, as well as from photographs to make works they are proud to show off!

Watercolor for the Young Artist

Week 6: July 20-24, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

Students will explore the world of watercolor, while building on traditional methods. Students will try various layering, masking, and wash techniques. The class will emphasize color theory and working from observation. Through both student-led experimentation and demonstrations, young artists will gain confidence in expressing their creative visions and painting from life or photographs. This class is great for students who are interested in experimenting with color and texture. Each day will be a little different, demonstrations and individual instruction will accommodate all skill levels.

Camp STLAG 2026: Young Artists, Week 6: July 20-24, Watercolor for the Young Artist

Portrait Drawing for the Young Artist

Week 6: July 20-24, Monday - Friday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM

Working from a live model, students will learn the fundamentals of portrait drawing in charcoal and graphite. Over the course of the week, the instructor will discuss strategies for defining facial anatomy and determining light and value to resolve the image into a solid likeness. The instructor will talk about posing, light, and composition. Students will leave with a deeper appreciation for portraiture!
